The Man, The Myth, The Double...

The 1st inning at the Coliseum saw matching 2-out singles by both teams. Then in the 2nd, that "Man" would make his 1st at-bat: Back to Vin with the call...

"Here's the pride of Donora, PA, one gentleman simply known as "The Man," Stan Musial. Musial currently 4 for 17 with a double, still some life in those 40-year-old legs and bat. The pitch from Podres is hit in the air to right field, Howard is there, one away." Podres would then give up a single by Don Taussig to right, and a walk to Daryl Spencer. Hal Smith then struck out, thus sending up his battery-mate: "Gibson had a doubl.e in 3 trips in his previous start, he's on with 2 on and 2 out. The stretch from Podres and the pitch is lined to center, base hit. Taussig rounds 3rd, the throw from Willie will be off-line, Taussig scores, Spencer will hold up at 2nd, RBI single for Gibson, 1-0, St. Louis."

The score would hold until the bottom of the 4th, when the Dodgers got a run on the board and it all started with something I teased in the "Coming Attractions." Yes, bring out those hankies: "Here's Tommy Davis, Davis singled in the 1st, Cards lead 1-0. The pitch from Gibson is inside, down goes Tommy and he may be seriously hurt. Gibson, though he may be intimidating, I'm sure Gibson did not mean any intent to hurt Tommy, the ball just hit Tommy flush on the wrist, Alston calls for the trainer, that may be it for Tommy not just for this game, but for a while as he is in severe agony. Jim Gilliam is being called on to run for Tommy at 1st, he will presumably take over at 3rd in the next half-inning. The trainers take Tommy off the field and on the way to the locker room for further evaluation, he will most certainly be gone for a long while, a tough early-season blow for Walt Alston and the team. The trainers carry Tommy off the field, listen to this ovation." (D-20 roll, 20 or 15 games) The Dodgers would regroup and get a walk from Wally Moon and then this from Frank Howard: "The pitch from Gibson is lined to left, a base hit. Gilliam rounds 2nd, rounds 3rd, the throw from Musial not nearly in time, Junior scores, we are tied at 1."

Then came the Cardinal 5th, which started with ground outs from Gibson and Julian Javier.  Curt Flood singled to left, Bill White singled to center, Flood to 3rd, Ken Boyer walked, Then came... "Musial's 0 for 2, flied to right and to left both times. Podres from the stretch, here's the pitch, it's lined to center, here comes Willie, but the carousel is running, in comes Flood, in comes White, they'll send Boyer next, the throw not nearly in time, Musial clears the bases with a double, it's 4 to 1, St. Louis." We'll pick things up in the 7th, where things get entertaining just as Bob Hope finishes his monologue and the awards are handed out. Can you stand the suspense?
