The M&M Boys Ride Again!

4-19-61: The Yankees carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 3rd inning against the expansion Angels. That's where we join the action on WPIX-TV with the legendary Mel Allen! "Since 1840, America's Finest." (Ballantine Beer) "Top of the Yankee order due up against Jerry Casale in the bottom of the 3rd, Yankees lead it 1-0 on a single by Maris in the 1st. Richardson drew a lead-off walk and scored that run in the 1st. Called strike three, that's the 4th in a row by Casale, 5 now for the game. Here's Kubek, who flied to the centerfielder Hunt in the 1st. Pitch to Kubek is hit high in the air to center, it'll shoot the gap, Kubek pulls into 2nd with a stand-up double. That's Kubek 5th on the young season."  Yogi, then Mickey Mantle drew walks bringing up the 1960 MVP... "Maris singled, drove in Richardson in the 1st. Infield in double play depth. Casale from the stretch, the pitch to Maris... Hit high in the air, deep to right, Pearson ...

Cameo appearance in the 9th...

" Before we go any further, the winners at tonight's Oscars ceremony were, Best Picture, The Apartment, Best Actor, Burt Lancaster, Elmer Gantry, Best Actress, Liz Taylor, Butterfield 8. The Supporting categories went to Peter Ustinov for Spartacus and Shirley Jones for Elmer Gantry. Billy Wilder was a double winner for Best Director and Original Screenplay for The Apartment and Richard Brooks won Best Adapted Screenplay for Elmer Gantry. We have a cameo appearance to tell you about right now, with his next start not until Friday, Sandy Koufax will work the top of the 9th inning here to try to keep it close, something Larry Sherry could not do in the 8th. First batter to face Koufax, another renowned Lefty, Stan Musial. The pitch to Musial, called strike three. One away for Don Taussig, who is 2 for 4 tonight. (He singled again) Daryl Spencer has singled and walked tonight, 1 for 3. Koufax from the stretch, the pitch in there for called strike three. Sandy's done the job ...

Wild happenings in the 8th...

After a wild 7th, the action moved on to the 8th at the Coliseum with the Cardinals leading 6-4. "Now with more play for Union Oil, here's Vin Scully. "All right, Jerry, it'll be Gibson, Javier and Flood to face Larry Sherry. Dodgers trail 6-4 after scoring 3 in the 7th after the Cards scored 2 in their half of the 7th. Gibson fought off an onslaught to even get a chance again in the 8th. The wind from Sherry and the pitch is grounded to Gilliam, he bobbles, throw to first is late, that will be an error on Gilliam and Gibson is on 1st to open the 8th. Now here's Javier, he's 0 for 4. Infield could be expecting a bunt here. Sherry from the stretch, the pitch to Javier is lined up the middle for a base hit, Gibson rounds 2nd, he'll head to 3rd and the Cardinals are flapping their wings again here in the 8th, at the corners with nobody out." Flood then struck out, Bill White stepped up to the plate just in time for another Dodger misstep: "Sherry ...

Oscar night drama and some Autoscript in the 7th...

The game moved on to the 7th, that's the Jerry Doggett inning, so... "Now for more play-by-play, for Lucky Strike, here's Jerry. OK Vin, Cards lead 4 to 1 as we head to the top of the 7th. Curt Flood leads off, he's singled his last 2 times up and scored in the 5th. The pitch from Podres is lined up the middle for Flood, his 3rd hit of the night, on with nobody out and here's Bill White, who has singled twice and scored in the 5th. Podres from the stretch, the pitch to White, lined to center, that's a base hit for White, his 3rd of the night which will send Flood to 2nd, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody out." Ken Boyer then flied to center, Dodgers changed pitchers, bringing in righty reliever Larry Sherry, who got Musial to fly to center. Don Taussig, who would eventually get his 3rd hit, did this with his 2nd: "The pitch from Sherry to Taussig, lined to center, base hit. Flood rounds 3rd, he will score, White will stop at 2nd, it's 5...

The Man, The Myth, The Double...

The 1st inning at the Coliseum saw matching 2-out singles by both teams. Then in the 2nd, that "Man" would make his 1st at-bat: Back to Vin with the call... " Here's the pride of Donora, PA, one gentleman simply known as "The Man," Stan Musial. Musial currently 4 for 17 with a double, still some life in those 40-year-old legs and bat. The pitch from Podres is hit in the air to right field, Howard is there, one away." Podres would then give up a single by Don Taussig to right, and a walk to Daryl Spencer. Hal Smith then struck out, thus sending up his battery-mate: "Gibson had a doubl.e in 3 trips   in his previous start, he's on with 2 on and 2 out. The stretch from Podres and the pitch is lined to center, base hit. Taussig rounds 3rd, the throw from Willie will be off-line, Taussig scores, Spencer will hold up at 2nd, RBI single for Gibson, 1-0, St. Louis." The score would hold until the bottom of the 4th, when the Dodgers got a run on t...

And the Oscar goes to...

"Well, hi again everybody, this is Vin Scully along with Jerry Doggett from the Coliseum, where tonight the Los Angeles Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a 4-game series. It's Oscars night over at the Santa Monica Auditorium, so while they're handing out Oscars, we'll bring   you some baseball here at the Coliseum. Left-hander Johnny Podres will matchup tonight against hard-throwing Cardinal righty Bob Gibson. Podres coming off a no-decision in his 1st start, Gibson coming off a loss in his. This game comes to you via the courtesy of Union Oil Company of California and your 76 stations and the American Tobacco Company and Lucky Strike cigarettes. When the envelopes are opened in Santa Monica, we'll let you know who the winners are, but until then, it's baseball time at the Coliseum, Dodgers vs. the Cardinals. And now from the Coliseum, here's our National Anthem."
