The M&M Boys Ride Again!
4-19-61: The Yankees carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 3rd inning against the expansion Angels. That's where we join the action on WPIX-TV with the legendary Mel Allen!
"Since 1840, America's Finest." (Ballantine Beer) "Top of the Yankee order due up against Jerry Casale in the bottom of the 3rd, Yankees lead it 1-0 on a single by Maris in the 1st. Richardson drew a lead-off walk and scored that run in the 1st. Called strike three, that's the 4th in a row by Casale, 5 now for the game. Here's Kubek, who flied to the centerfielder Hunt in the 1st. Pitch to Kubek is hit high in the air to center, it'll shoot the gap, Kubek pulls into 2nd with a stand-up double. That's Kubek 5th on the young season."
Yogi, then Mickey Mantle drew walks bringing up the 1960 MVP... "Maris singled, drove in Richardson in the 1st. Infield in double play depth. Casale from the stretch, the pitch to Maris... Hit high in the air, deep to right, Pearson looks up, it is GOING, GOING, IT IS GONE!!! Grand Slam home run for Roger Maris! He turned on a Casale curve and sent that ball soaring into the bleachers. 5-0, Yankees! HOW ABOUT THAT!"
The Yankees would inflict no further damage, but the Halos would inflict a little off Art Ditmar in the 4th, getting a leadoff triple from Albie Pearson and a subsequent sacrifice fly from Big Klu. Now to the bottom of the 4th and the other half of the M&M's, p-b-p this time coming from another legend, Red Barber!
"Ditmar struck out swinging in the 2nd, 5-1 in favor of Yankees. The pitch to Ditmar is hit to center field and will fall for a single. Ditmars on 1st, here's Richardson, walk and run scored in 1st, struck out in 3rd. The pitch to Richardson, high for ball four. Yankees now on 1st and 2nd, nobody out and threatening to turn this into a rout." Kubek and Berra then hit flies to right, setting the stage for an even bigger fly to right from... "Mantle waiting for the 2-2 from Casale. Casale calls time, asks for a new ball from the umpire. Umpire grants request, here we go again with the 2-2 count. Casale stretches, the pitch to Mantle is swung on and hit deep and I mean deep to right. Pearson waves at the ball and the Yankees just chased out Mr. Casale. Another mammoth blast from Mantle, this one with 2 out after the Slam from Maris in the 3rd. 8-1, Yanks, all the runs coming from Maris and Mantle, just as it should be. Maris, RBI single in the 1st, grand slam homer in the 3rd, Mantle, 3-run shot here in the 4th. It was a matter of time before that unsteady Casale would finally collapse like that teetering drunk fallen to the ground. Now let's finally welcome Spring to the Bronx!. Pitcher Jack Spring, that is."
The Angels would score one more run in the 6th, making the eventual final score, 8-2. Ditmar pitched 7-1/3 innings, giving way to Jim Coates to close out a magnificent performance from the "M&M Boys." Hope you enjoyed this one!
