The Don Zimmer Show...
The Braves threatened, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody on in the top of the 2nd, before Hobbie put down the rally with a fly ball to center and a 6-4-3 DP. Al Heist led off the Cub 2nd with a homer to right, making the score 2-0 after 2. The Braves would tie it up in the 3rd after Carl Willey led off with a pop to Zimmer at 2nd. (More from Zim later) Then up stepped Lee Maye:
DEAN: Maye fouled to the catcher in the 1st, Braves trail by 2 here in the 3rd. The pitch to Maye is lined up the middle for a base hit. Maye now 1 for 2, here comes Bolling, a fly to left in the 1st. Maye takes off, the throw to 2nd, not in time, it gets away from Zimmer, it'll be backed up by DeMerit at center, no further advancement for Maye, who swipes his 2nd base of the season. (Bolling walks) Here's Mathews, recipient of a walk in the 1st. Infield playing for 2. The pitch to Mathews, lined to center and through for a base hit, Maye races past 3rd, he will put Milwaukee on the board, rounding 2nd, heading for 3rd is Bolling, Braves on the scoreboard, now it's 2-1 in favor of the Cubs. Tying run at 3rd now for Henry Aaron, who was caught looking in the 1st. Infield remains in Double Play depth. Hobbie gets the signal from Taylor, here's the pitch, it is hit to center field, Heist is there, Bolling tags up, Heist makes the catch, Bolling will score, Mathews tags as well, he'll go to 2nd with the go-ahead run, Aaron ties it up with the sac fly, 2-2 in the 3rd. There are now 2 outs and Joe Adcock will bat. (Adcock bounced to Hobbie to end the inning) There were 2 runs, 2 hits, no errors, one left at 2nd. After 2+1/2 innings of play, Braves 2, Cubs 2. More Falstaff please!
Now, Don Zimmer...
DEAN: Zimmer walked in the 1st; score tied at 2 in the home 3rd. The pitch to Zimmer is hit high and deep, back goes Maye, he'll never see that ball again, it is GONE! The Cubs with their 2nd home run of the game are back in top on Zimmer's lead-off homer, it's 3-2, Podner!
Cubs would then go 1-2-3 after the homer, Braves went quietly in the 4th. (SPOILER ALERT: Hobbie would retire 17 in a row from the 3rd to the 9th) Now for more of the Don Zimmer Show, bottom of the 4th, Bouchee led off with a walk, Heist doubled to 2nd to open the bottom of the 4th. Willey settled down to get Taylor on a shallow fly to center and got Hobbie on a drawn-in grounder to short. Then came Ashburn...
DEAN: Ashburn 0-2, but reached on error and scored in 1st. Infield is back, the pitch to Ashburn, base hit to left! Bouchee scores, Heist scampers in from 2nd, he will score, it is now 5-2, Cubs! 2-run single for Ashburn now brings up Zimmer, who homered in the 3rd. Willey gets the signal from Lau, the pitch to Zimmer is swung on and hit deep to left, Zimmer's done it again! His 2nd home run of the game breaks it wide open for the Cubs in the 4th! It is 7-2! Here comes Dressen, that'll be it for Willey.
It would be it for Willey, but not for Hobbie as he continued to record outs and a solo homer for good measure in the 6th, making it 8-2, Cubbies. (His 2nd in as many starts) We'll send it to the 9th to see if Hobbie will finish with a flourish, or if the Braves will make him work for those final three outs. (SPOILER ALERT: First 2 batters in the 9th, some guys named Mathews and Aaron)
